Diet and Nutrition After Weight Loss Surgery
After bariatric surgery it will be important to engage in new eating habits, both in terms of quantity of food consumed and types of food eaten. Each person’s weight loss journey and dietary needs are unique. Your physician will work to create a customized diet plan just for you.
Watch our Nutrition Class video to learn how your diet is an important part of your weight loss process.
What Types of Food Will You Be Eating?
Immediately following weight loss surgery, you will likely be limited to a liquid-only diet. Liquids primarily include broths, tea, juice, and some sugar-free gelatin products. Your care team will give you a precise list of what you can consume, and will answer any specific questions you may have.
Your stomach should be healed after roughly a week, at which point you will begin the switch to solid food. Nutrition will become a primary concern, and you’ll begin to get familiar with the new eating habits you’ll need to maintain from this point onward.
Who Will Assist You?
Your care will be primarily provided by your surgeon and our on-staff dietician, though any member of the Fresno Bariatric care team will provide support if needed. Your care team will monitor your health and direct the advancement of your diet after bariatric surgery. They are equally concerned about both your health and your enjoyment of your meals and are willing to make dietary adjustments if you are unhappy with your dietary plan.
Are There Other Resources Available to Help?
On our website, you’ll find a variety of excellent patient resources to help you successfully change your diet after bariatric surgery. Included in these resources is a nutrition guide designed specifically for bariatric surgery patients, available both in English and in Spanish. The nutrition guide, in combination with the information you get from our care team, will help you understand health benefits of the food you eat. Eventually you will reach a point where you are considering the nutritional value of everything before you eat it.
