Your Bariatric Care Team
Our Bariatric Care Team Members are certified professionals that have received additional training and certifications to care for patients with Bariatric and Metabolic diseases. Our bariatric team is comprised of Dieticians, Therapists, Mid-Level Practitioners, and Certified Bariatric Nurses. Also, all hospital employees are required to take additional bariatric sensitivity training to work at FHSH.
Our mid-level practitioners are specialty trained in Metabolic and Bariatric surgery and disease.
Alice Jackson, N.P.-C., C.B.N.
A central San Joaquin Valley native, Alice Jackson went to nursing school at Fresno City College and received her master’s in nursing at California State University, Fresno. Alice has been nursing for 26 years. She is certified as a Nurse Practitioner, Bariatric Nurse and Operating Room Nurse. She is a current member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN). Alice has lectured at ASMBS National Society meetings and currently is a member of the Item Writing Committee for the Certified Bariatric Nursing exam.
Our therapy staff is here to support you and guide you while you go through this transformation. All patients will meet at least once with a therapist prior to surgery. Mike and David also lead our ongoing support groups.
Michael Roubicek, PhD, Clinical Psychology; LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker)
Dr. Roubicek has worked with our surgeons for more than 11 years in bariatrics, and has been a psychotherapist since 1983. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a master’s degree in Social Work and a master’s in Marriage & Family Therapy. He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from what is now Alliant University in Fresno. Dr. Roubicek believes it is important for bariatric surgery candidates to have a good understanding of the physical and psychological changes that will occur after surgery, as this preparation contributes to a successful outcome.
David Hill, MS, LMFT
David is proud to say that he is a Clovis native, having attended Clovis West High School. He later went on to study business, but soon, following his passion for helping people, migrated to study family therapy. He received his master’s degree from the University of Phoenix in Counseling Psychology. While at the University of Phoenix, he mentored students by helping them make decisions about their education path. He has also spent time providing individual, couple, family and marriage counseling in Fresno. While doing so, he worked closely with bariatric patients pre- and post-op, and got to understand the challenges, struggles, and victories that accompany bariatric surgery.
Certified Bariatric Nurses:
Jennifer Logan, R.N., C.B.N.
Certified Bariatric Nurse Jennifer Logan, RN, is a team member at Advanced Laparoscopic Surgical Associates, as well as at Fresno Heart & Surgical Hospital. She attends support group meetings and is often the nurse at the physician’s office that answers your questions and offers encouragement and education preoperatively and postoperatively. Jennifer enjoys working in bariatrics and being part of the team that partners with patients to change lives.
Cheryl Engle, R.D.
Cheryl Engle is a Registered Dietitian with 24 years of experience, specializing in weight management counseling. She obtained her BS in Dietetics from CSU Fresno in 1989, completed her Dietetic Internship through the Porterville Developmental Hospital’s Dietetic Program in 1990, and successfully completed the Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management Program in 2008. As a Consultant Dietitian and Management Team Member of Dietary Directions, Inc., she has been a Clinical Nutritionist for over 10 years. During this time she has taught the bariatric surgery nutrition classes, conducted individual pre-operative nutritional evaluations and conducted the nutritional evaluations and counseling for the Comprehensive Medical Weight Management Program. She currently serves as a preceptor for both the CSU Fresno and The Central Valley WIC Dietetic Internship programs, is a member of the Dietetics in Health Care Communities and Weight Management Practice Groups of The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and has served locally in numerous board positions for the Central Valley District, California Dietetic Association. In her spare time, Cheryl and her family and pets enjoy being outdoors, traveling, and taste testing new recipes.
