Steps to Success
There are four simple steps in going through our weight-loss surgery program.
Each step is important, and each patient may go through them at different rates. This program is about you, and we want you to be comfortable as you move forward.
Step one: Get educated
Learn as much as you can about weight-loss, or bariatric/metabolic surgery. Find out what surgical options are available, the risks and benefits, others’ experiences and the cost of surgery. Absorb all you can.
While this web site and others are good resources, a great way to learn about weight-loss surgery is by attending one of our free seminars.
If you have questions after attending a seminar, please make sure you ask at your next appointment or call our bariatric coordinator.
Step two: Talk to your doctor
After you’ve gathered information about weight-loss surgery and participated in an in-person or online seminar, it’s time to talk to one of our doctors. He will help you determine if you are a candidate for surgery, help you identify your options, and work with you to determine what you will need to do to prepare for surgery.
At your first appointment you will receive the “Fresno Bariatric Patient Guide” which will help guide you through the first phases of the process. But remember that we're always here to help answer any questions you may have! We truly are with you every step of the way.
Step three: Pre-surgical requirements
If your doctor believes you are a candidate for weight-loss surgery, it’s time to begin the pre-surgical process. This will include the standard pre-operative labs and testing, as well as additional education on nutrition and lifestyle changes.
You will have a chance to speak with a therapist, and then when all the pre-operative requirements are complete, you will meet with your surgeon again.
The surgeon’s office will submit your request for surgery to your insurance company for authorization. If you have already had medical testing done in the past 12 months, please bring a copy of your test results when you meet with your surgeon.
Step four: Prepare yourself
In the weeks leading up to surgery, prepare yourself physically, mentally and emotionally for the life-changing journey you are about to begin. Lose as much weight as you can. Develop healthy new eating habits. Start exercising. Join a peer support group. Keep a diary of your thoughts and feelings. Get your friends and family involved in the preparation process.
With these four steps to success, you’ll be on your way!
